Skipping it is not recommended. Without a filter, your refrigerator dispenses unfiltered tap water containing chlorine, potential lead, sediment, and other contaminants. The filter also protects your fridge's internal water lines and ice maker from sediment buildup. Replacing it on schedule is one of the simplest ways to protect your family's drinking water quality.
Installation takes under a minute — no tools needed:
1.Open the fridge and locate the filter housing in the upper right corner.
2.Push in slightly and twist counterclockwise to remove the old filter.
3.Insert the GlacierFresh GFXWFE™ and twist clockwise until it locks with a click.
4.Dispense and discard 2–3 gallons of water to flush the new filter.
5.Hold the Filter Reset button for 3 seconds to reset the indicator light.
The GlacierFresh GFXWFE™ is rated for 6 months or 300 gallons. Stretching it beyond that is not recommended — as the carbon block becomes saturated, filtration efficiency drops and the filter can actually become a breeding ground for bacteria. If you have a smaller household with light usage, 6 months is still the safe maximum regardless of gallon count.
This usually means the filter wasn't fully flushed. Run at least 2–3 gallons through the dispenser and discard before drinking. If the chlorine smell persists after flushing, check that the filter is fully seated and locked — a loose filter allows unfiltered water to bypass the carbon block. If the issue continues, contact our support team for a replacement.
A third-party filter is completely safe as long as it carries legitimate NSF certification — not just "tested to NSF standards." I would like to return the ones I can and get ones that work. I tried 2 of the pack I was sent and on one I even tried moving the RFID around on the new filter to see if it was jsut a placement thing but even that didnt work

I have been using one of the filters for a couple of weeks and I am very happy with the results. I was so happy that I ordered 3 more during the sale. I have two GE refrigerators and the OEM filters were significantly more expensive. Filters were shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I recommend Glacier Fresh and the filters appear to be working great.
The glacier fresh MXFE filter for GE refrigerator’s requiring a rfid chip actually worked. After installing the filter I got water through the dispenser instead of an “err” msg on the refrigerator console. An unexpected bonus, other than the lower price compared to the GE filter was the Glacier Fresh filter was easier to install.
A direct replacement for the XWFE (I love that model name) that actually flows water! The first time! And does it for the six months that it is supposed to! For less money!

Works great. Really annoying that GE decided to force their overpriced water filters on their consumers by embedding a RFID chip. Nice there is a more cost effective filter now available that has the RFID chip.
This filter is really compatible with XWFE filter for GE side by side refrigerator. The chip is automatically detected. Filter installs easily and comes with self adhesive labels, making it convenient to monitor usage. Price is very favorable to ordering from GE, and shipping is free with prime. When I first pulled the filter out and looked at the connections, I thought it would not fit, I was ready to return it. I read up a little more on it and decided to try it. Fit GE XWFE perfectly!
